What you Need to Know About 501c3 Paperwork

In an introduction to 501(c)(3) organizations, 501c3 documents are sometimes referred to but are often the IRS Determination Letters. Donors and other parties are required to view the IRS 501c3 paperwork documentation to verify an organization is tax-exempt.

Identify the person certifying the articles as the actual owner or a duly authorized agent of the corporation in the introductory clause.
  • Article I – Provide the organization's name. 
  • Article II – Provide the address of the nonprofit corporation's principal office in the state in which it was incorporated.
  • Article III - Describe the nonprofit organization's charitable purposes. It may include a broad purpose that discusses the organization's charitable, educational, or scientific objectives.  
  • Article IV - Describe the organization's status and the trustees. Nonprofits can change trustees and their status over time. 
  • Article V - Detailed information about the nonprofit's operations is provided here with 501c3 paperwork, demonstrating its status as a nonprofit. The section specifically prohibits political activity and distributions to individuals except in certain circumstances.  
  • Article VI - This section describes how assets are distributed upon the dissolution of a nonprofit. Upon distribution, all assets should be donated to non-profit organizations or state, local, or national governments. 
  • Signatures – A signature authorizing the articles should be found at the end with the date signed on 501c3 paperwork.


How does the charity paperwork work?

Tax-exempt organizations classified as IRC 501(c)(3) can be classified into two categories: public charities and private foundations. Typically, charities that receive a greater percentage of their income on 501c3 paperwork from the public do so such as the American Cancer Society and the ASPCA.

Individuals usually form, fund, and control private foundations (for example, executives who set up foundations).

  2. Choose an appropriate name for your organization 
  3. Identify your nonprofit's mission statement 
  4. Make sure your charity is registered 
  5. Request a Federal Employer Identification Number 
  6. Make sure your charity is tax-exempt by completing the appropriate IRS form 
  7. Comply with all local and state requirements 
  8. Create an outstanding website for your nonprofit 
  9. Ensure your charity is adequately covered by insurance 
  10. Develop your fundraising strategy with 501c3 paperwork 
  11. Reduce your costs as much as possible 
  12. Volunteer as often as possible 
  13. Ensure that employee relations are handled properly
